Sustainable Energy At Pilgrims School

View All Catgories

Project Overview

Pilgrims School in Bedford has taken a major step toward improving sustainability and lowering long-term operational costs through the installation of a 185.11 kWp solar PV system.

Designed and delivered by Eco UK Group, the project provides clean, renewable energy to the campus, helping the school significantly reduce its carbon footprint while supporting its commitment to environmental responsibility and future-focused infrastructure.

Eco Solar School Case Study

Client Background

Pilgrims School is a well-established educational institute serving the Bedford community. With rising energy costs and an ambition to embrace more sustainable practices, the school sought a long-term solution that could reduce grid dependence, lower electricity bills, and demonstrate environmental leadership to its students and stakeholder’s.

System Design & Components

To maximise annual energy output and resilience, the 185.11 Kwp system was engineered using high performance, industry leading technology.

  • SolarEdge Inverter Technology: A single 100KW SolarEdge inverter paired with S1200 optimisers ensures each panel operates at peak performance, greatly reducing losses from shading or module mismatch.
  • PV Modules: 346 JA Solar 535w high-efficiency modules were installed across the available rooftop space offering strong output and long-term reliability.
  • K2 Mounting system – A robust upright seam mounting solution tailored to the school’s roof structure for safe, secure long terms installation.
  • Monitoring and Maintenance: The SolarEdge monitoring platform provides real-time performance insights, allowing the school and ECO UK Group to remotely trach system health, output and ongoing performance.

Implementation & Challenges

The project required meticulous planning to maintain safety on a functioning school site. Cable routing was achieved using galvanised cable trays across the roof, with watertight entry points into the building.

The existing Hager panel board lacked capacity, so Eco UK Group installed a new Schneider PowerPact 4 panel board, including a 400A main incomer, MCCBs, surge protection, and metering to support the solar integration.

Work was completed with minimal disruption, including a planned weekend shutdown to conduct electrical upgrades safely.

Results & Impact

  • Estimated 32.78 CO ² tonnes per year
  • Significant energy savings through reduced grid reliance
  • 30% of the school’s energy coming from solar

The outcomes make the system a highly effective investment, providing both costs relief and measurable sustainability impact.
